Reverse Garbage is preparing for the first exhibition of the year.

That says it all I guess, for the loved up month of February expect lots of red and pink and hearts and from me.... lots of glitter! Join us all from 6pm with drinks, local live music and lots of laughs and smiles. Plus all the work is available for purchase on the night and through to the 29th February.

I am well underway with getting things ready and I have already dropped in a few small pre-exhibition wonders. Reverse Garbage is open 9-5 Monday-Friday and you can find them in their new location at 20 Burke street, Woolloongabba, Brisbane.

Busy Bee

Well, it really has been a busy couple of weeks! For those of you who follow me on Facebook you'll have some idea of what is going on; for those of you who don't... you should ;)

So, a bit of a catch up:

Today I handed in my submission for the Reverse Garbage end of year exhibition "I Heart Handmade". This one is all about sustainable gift giving. All pieces will be available for under $50 and there are about 15 different Brisbane artists work's on show and available for purchase throughout the night, there will be the usual beverages for purchase, live music and free nibbles! Plus all sorts of entertainment and the chance to meet some of the artists exhibiting.
Come along on the opening night to be part of the festivities and for the best pick of the goodies.
The exhibition will be a long running one and will not close until Revere Garbage closes for the holidays on the 24th December.

I also entered the inaugural Mystery Bag Challenge, which I am quite excited about. I was given a sealed paper bag with some hand-picked goodies from Reverse Garbage and had to use every item to come up with a singular or series of gifts for the exhibition. Come along on the night so have a look at them!

Along with the submission the beautiful Rosina asked me to do the photo-shoot for the promotion of the Exhibition. The photo will be printed in colour in the Brisbane MX (free daily city-wide newspaper) some time before the 26th (their words not mine), so pick up a copy and keep an eye out for my ugly mug and the chance to have a sneak peak at my submission.

So that takes us up to the 26th...

From then on; the 3rd, 10th, 17th December I will be at the West End Twilight Markets on the corner of Wilson and Boundary street. I can have any custom orders put in before the 1st available for pick-up at the market on the 3rd all orders after that all orders will have to wait until the 20th December. I am hoping to have a selection of journals ready for these markets.

The 11th I will be making my debut at the Kerbside Lane Market from 12 - 5pm.

In the mean time I am also offering one-on-one beginners sewing classes followed by four project classes throughout the week and on weekends. Sewing machine and materials provided. Please send me an email to book.*


I think that if I'm not completely exhausted after all of that I may get around to finishing the website, making the shop fully functional and adding all of Yun's photographs along with coming up with some new designs.

Last Exhibition for the year

So, now that that hectic week has passed I can now focus on the next big thing. The Reverse Garbage end of year exhibition. This time it's all about sustainable gift-giving:

Come down and do your festive shopping early and all gifts will be under $50. 

I will be exhibiting my gift bows, journals, Christmas cards, some purses and lots more!

Spread the word; the opening night is 26th November at 6pm. It runs until 9pm there is a bar and nibbles too. There will be some brilliant live music and a great atmosphere. See you there :)

Getting Close

First of all, I am having huge difficulties trying to get the website working from my end, so please bare with me and my fumbling around with updating it. I am currently trying to sort out more photographs, content and a shop. For now, please feel free to email me with your orders.

So, for all of you who follow me on Facebook you will know that I am exhibiting at the Reverse Garbage end of year exhibition, this one is called I HEART HANDMADE and it is based around sustainable gift-giving. This means that not only are all the items under $50, but they are all a minimum of 75% recycled, reclaimed or up-cycled. Let me know if there is anything you would like to see there.


Many of you may have noticed that recently I have been chopping and changing what I have been bringing out. Currently I have some fantastic gift bows available. They were originally only to be sold at markets, but as you all love them so much; when I found some bow-sized cardboard boxes at Reverse Garbage today, I couldn't resist!

Large Gift Bows

Top - Spiderman and The Punisher. Bottom - National Geographic (2002).

Bows are 11cm and self-adhesive.

This means that I have 20 lots of bows I can ship, in time for Christmas. In stock I currently have the black and white The Phantom, colour Spiderman and The Punisher and full colour gloss National Geographic, each bow is around 10cm. Custom orders are available. The bows are $5 and shipping is $6.35 per box, within Australia. Each box will hold up to three bows, or you can mix and match with any smaller items. I will send you a free gift with each bow if you order before November 10th*.


I have also been creating hand-bound journals. I have had a lot of fun with these and it has given me a lot of freedom in my cover designs. I am only taking custom orders for these journals as they take quite a lot of time and work. Please check out the website for more information on how you can customise them.

Blue Journal

 Front Cover of the blue notebook is a medium weight blue and brown material with a faux-suede embellishment. The book measures 145x115. It has 80 pages. All pages are reclaimed medium weight sketching paper, plain off-white. Perfect for sketching, writing, water colours etc.

The inside covers are a pale blue pearl paper.

Quilted Journal

 

This journal has a patchwork cover and measures 145x115.

The inside covers are black paper and the pages are reclaimed Australian Hand-Made paper. The paper is extremely porous. The spine is larger on this book due to the thickness of the paper, but it still has 80 pages.

 Rainbow Journal

This journal has a plain black faux-velvet cover, lilac cover pages and a selection of bright pages. This note-book is 145x115 and also has 80 pages but as the pages are printer paper the spine is thinner. The pages are: blue, green, yellow, orange, red and fuchsia. These are the only journals in stock currently and they are for sale!*

I made myself an A5 journal last week to try and get myself back into sketching/drawing/journaling. It has become my new best friend. I will take a photo of it at some point. 

I'm off to make something...


*The gift bows and journals are not part of the free postage before 1st November offer. But the notebooks do fit in the boxes. Maybe I'll send you a free bow with each journal if you ask nicely.

Materialistic

The exhibition was great fun, thank you so much to everyone who turned up and a special thank you to Dash Robin who came along and took a moment to have a nose at my work.

There were so many lovely pieces there that I wish I could have bought most of the exhibition.
Reverse Garbage did a lovely job with presenting the cards and a few of my other items were scattered randomly around.

I love the card stand, I will have to get my hands on one of them!

A lot of the work at the exhibition was mixed in with other people's so just to clarify; all of the cards are mine as are the six pouches. I seem to have lost the photos I took of the pouches before I submitted them but as you can see there is a grey denim and orange cord pouch with a white metal zip and orange floss. A second blue stripy and blue upholstery pouch with a beige faux suede star and a nylon zip. A non-descript new fabric I'm trying out with a burgundy upholstery back and a nylon zip. And finally a new design for a mp3 player/smart phone case in purple and green with green buttons a calico lining and a nylon zip, including a hole for your headphones.

I found my notebook amongst a selection of blue works. 

And my little faux suede and faux velvet starfish was just chilling with the brown and beige creations.

For those of you who have made it to the exhibition and noticed that the prices seem a little over the top, please be aware that Reverse Garbage is a non-profit incentive from Friends of the Earth Brisbane and that they do put a mark-up on the pieces available in the Reverse Emporium. Money made from the sales goes back into supporting Friends of the Earth.

The exhibition runs until the 22nd September and after then I will be collecting any unsold items and they will be available through my website and at various up-coming markets.

If you're in Brisbane I suggest that you do go down and check out the rest of the fantastic work in the Reverse Emporium. Most of the work will be there until the 22nd September and the next exhibition is coming up in November. 

Exhibition

So, this morning I woke up to an email that informed me that I have been selected for an exhibition on the 10th September, at Reverse Emporium at Reverse Garbage, Brisbane.

The exhibition opening night will run from 6pm to 9pm that night at 20 Burke Street, Woolloongabba, Brisbane, 4102. This is easily accessible by public transport; either a train to Park Road (Boggo Road) train station, and a short walk (approx 3mins), or various busses to the P.A Hospital or Boggo Road Busway. You can also cycle or drive there, it is accessible from Ipswich road (Northbound ONLY) or Park Road, Woolloongabba.

The exhibition pieces will be available for sale, and viewable at the Reverse Emporium until the 22nd September 2011.

The exhibition is called Materialistic, and all submissions are 75% or more salvaged, recycled or pre-loved.

For those of you who don't know the wonders of Reverse Garbage; "Reverse Garbage Brisbane is a not for profit worker-run cooperative that collects industrial discards to sell to the community for creative re-use".* You can check out their website here.
